MetaFrame 1.8 Best Practices

Install MetaFrame as a Member Server in an Existing Domain

Keep the Citrix Server as a Dedicated Application Server

For best performance and optimization, DO NOT install third party or other services on the MetaFrame server.

Keep the MetaFrame server resources available for serving and processing applications. It is not advisable to install SQL server, Exchange server and other Back Office products on your MetaFrame server. In large-scale deployments, utilize separate file servers for home directories and other files.

Use Add/Remove Programs to Install All Applications

Format All Partitions Using NTFS

It is strongly recommended to format all partitions using NTFS file system for better security.

Do not Install the Sysinfo Utility

Installed with MS Office, this utility can be a potential security hole. It allows users to run other applications from a command line. Either do not install this tool at the time of Office installation, or rename and/or secure the .exe file.

Maximizing Performance with Internet Explorer

Setting up Personalized Settings in Internet Explorer 4.0 may cause CPU congestion. Completely remove the following registry key (which runs the Personalized Settings setup and other Internet Explorer 4.0 settings at logon) for dramatic performance increase:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run BrowserWebCheck: REG_SZ: loadwc.exe

Set Normal.dot on a Per User Basis

The Normal.dot file needs to be set on a per user basis into each users home directory. If users are not using home directories, make sure the file is set in the USER DEFAULT directory.

Improving Performance over the Internet or Wan Link

Improving Display Performance on Windows 2000 with Terminal Services for Individual Users

Improving the Seamless user experience can be accomplished by modifying built in registry keys. These keys are available in Windows 2000 with Terminal Services.

The default options for these entries work, but aren't optimal. AutoEndTasks helps stabilize profiles, CursorBlinkRate helps reduce network traffic, and MenuShowDelay gives users improved user interface responsiveness. SmoothScroll, DragFullWindows, and MinAnimate settings improve Explorer interface response. For More information see: Q226931- How to Minimize Graphics Use with Terminal Services.

These entries can also be manually set at the Connection level for all users. See the Document: "Improving Display Performance on Windows 2000 with Terminal Services for All Users" for more Information.

Ensure that the following registry entries are modified for each user:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"AutoEndTasks"="1"
"WaitToKillAppTimeout"="20000"
"MenuShowDelay"="10"
"CursorBlinkRate"="-1"
"SmoothScroll"=dword:00000000
"DragFullWindows"="0"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics]
"MinAnimate"="1"

Consider writing these to Hkey_Users\default on new installations.
